A Dream about my old Ranch

I opened the door onto a bright sunny day at Broken Arrow Ranch. A strange animal was walking up the path towards me, half miniature horse, part dog, and part deer with antlers. The critter kept walking toward me, followed by a few kids in power wheelchairs, accompanied by their support teams. The little group walked up, wishing me a good morning with their electronic talkers.

The place was alive with love and excitement. A bus parked by my old studio had taken kids inside to listen to music in a room and see the way the music had been recorded. A film was showing in another room, equipped with an old machine that was used for editing. These kids were fascinated with the machines and the story their guide was telling them about the music and movies that could be made there.

Next, they took their agile power chairs out into the fields and hung out with goats, buffalo, llamas, alpacas, horses, cows, other animals and birds they found there with them. These were places they could go with the power chairs, but could not ever get near in their normal chairs. Assistants were trained on how to use the powerful 4 wheel drive chairs. The Ranch had several of these chairs, maintained and operating flawlessly.

This was the Bridge School Nature Camp, celebrating the legacy of Pegi Young, who envisioned the Bridge School when our son, Ben Young was first born with Cerebral Palsy. At that time there were no schools to handle this situation.

In my dream, ‘The Bridge School Nature Camp’ celebrates the life of Pegi Young and the wonderful children with special needs she had a vision for.

This is a beautiful dream that could someday come true.
