Doing recent interviews for Before and After, I noticed lots of comments about the abundance of records I had released that were based on older records - things from my archives. I agreed that there were a lot of these and I like the fact that the archives has made it possible for me to bring some of these records to the fore.

I also appreciate the time I had to make all-new records - songs recently written during this decade. Here is a look back.

EARTH
my own songs in a concept album where the audience is all animals and the sounds they make are the sounds of Earth. One of my favorites, this album took a long time to create in the studio, based on performances with Promise of the Real..

HITCHHIKER
recorded in 1976 in one night at Indigo ranch in Malibu, David Briggs producing…. a collection of favorite songs I wanted to perform acoustic at the time…. similar in concept to Before and After.

PARADOX
a film by Daryl Hannah, featuring ‘Promise of the Real’ and the songs we were playing at the time.

Paradox is a dream and a home movie.
Neil & The Real were going to be sitting around for three days adjusting to the altitude while they were waiting to play a show at a very high elevation. We didn’t want to miss capturing any mystical musical moments that would inevitably spring up.
However, no one really felt like having a documentarian always lurking around. Since Promises Of The Real & Neil are so playful and so creative we decided it would be fun to make a narrative film.
However, it was a film made backwards…
The guys still needed to be sitting around, because they had to adjust the altitude with only brief rehearsals ( in order to familiarize themselves with Neil‘s new songs). Our only cast members had to be the crew (pretty much all men) a few of our local pals, their kids, and the band - all non-actors.
Fortunately, the land lends itself to enchanted animal encounters and it is a perfect setting for a western.
In this Western, a gun may be drawn but never shot, there’s no real plot. It’s just a slice of an odd dream life where music can literally lift you off your feet.
So with a rough six page outline, and some clothes we had or gathered at local vintage stores, we jumped into our western version of a home movie - with a super 8, a cellphone & CK Vollick’s camera.
We placed it in a time when women have given up on trying to reason with menfolk, moved away and have taken to looking after the peaceful & sustainable aspects of life - basic needs, animals, babies and farming ( which is why they’re rarely seen). The men still stuck in old ways have not given up their guns or their pillaging & plundering. They mainly sit around, shooting the shit, but occasionally when the moon is right and inspiration strikes, some transcendent moments of musical magic actually do happen.
