In the mid eighties, Crazy Horse was touring America with the ‘In a Rusted Out Garage’ tour. Briggs and a recording truck followed the band to the majority of the shows. The following is my notes upon first hearing this recording.

MR Soul and Cinnamon girl….we are in the eighties. everything is bigger!

It’s the eighties. we’ve been doing it now for maybe 16 years. Things have changed. Sounds are changing. Time is flying…..Ralph’s big snare! Briggs was going for it in these mixes. Wild tremolo/vibrato in When u Dance.

Down by the River -  I feel that my voice is much stronger then than it is now. I am playing some crazy shit on old black. This was a long time ago. Life is a trip folks . . . .Hang in there . . 

Acoustic guitar on Heart of Gold is more full to me now than on the recent versions. I was using a cord then and not a wireless system and I think the cord sounded better. Briggs had a big sound on the acoustic.

Gold rush is strong overall. even with the piano mis-balanced at the source, i feel good about the sound and the take.

Driveback… a seventies song… bars girls  / drugs. they all are in there. Guitar sounds real good here. Larry Cragg (guitar tech) working his genius. Rough edit near the end but it rocks…easy to see why Briggs did that. great ending. How the horse falls together!

Opera star is over the top! The Horse is rockin’. Good times! You’ll never be an opera star.

Sure am singing on this one . . .! playing my heart out. Living over the top. The Horse…..as crazy at it gets . . . . .Elvis barking . . .he loves it . . . .

Sugar mountain…written back when i was 20 somewhere in Ontario. Still a happy song to do today. I sing it for my son Ben on Facetime sometimes. It is always fun to do that. It was good this night too.

Welcome to my archive. We hope you enjoy your stay here, browsing through more than 50 years of music and movies. It has been my pleasure to write and perform these songs and make these films for you. They are all here. Many of them are found in versions you probably have never heard or seen. 

This archive is assembled chronologically. It has a [timeline](/#/timeline?position=15.541873825051773&_k=zfkjlf) with all of the records in order and a corresponding [file cabinet](/#/drawer?position=0&_k=er6jz7) full of the relevant information for every recording found on the timeline. This includes production and engineering credits, musician credits, publishing credits, press reviews, film and video, historic live performances, photos, and memorabilia. 

There are about ten unreleased albums and a few unreleased films in this archive. These are projects I did not release at the time for one reason or another, and many of the songs subsequently appeared on other albums as the years flew past. Sometimes unreleased albums are just ‘sketched’ in on the timeline, with rough pencil drawings of the art. These drawings will evolve into full color covers as time goes by and the albums are released. That way you can see things coming. This archive is designed to be a living document, constantly evolving and including every new recording and film as it is made. It is not yet complete as we are still adding a lot of detail to the older recordings. The timeline also illustrates all of our tours and recording sessions.

In the music creation process, I have sometimes assembled an album and not released it for a variety of reasons. At Reprise Records, I have had a great working relationship with the company since 1969 and we play back every new album together, talking about how to release it and how it should be introduced. My manager, Elliot Roberts, always supported my art and made sure we got to do what we needed. We really wanted everyone to be behind what I was about to release, so these album playback meetings were very important. There we would decide some of the singles to be released and how the marketing of a work should be approached. Each project has been a labor of love.

Of course, listening to the music is the most important aspect of this experience, and we wanted it to be the best experience possible. ‘Play’ buttons on each file card allow you to listen to the selected recording.

Xstream by NYA is the chosen playback method at NYA because streaming music is immediate and gives you the most connected experience as you browse. Most importantly, Xstream by NYA allows you to hear all the music your bandwidth will allow, all the way up to a Full Resolution experience. All of the music here is in its highest audio quality; original pre-digital analog albums were transferred to the highest digital resolution. More recent recordings are found here in their native resolution, so your listening experience is the best it can be. 

It would be impossible for you to get better quality sound anywhere else. If you have the bandwidth, Full Resolution is attained with no compression, unlike any other streaming service to date. Full resolution is attained when your bandwidth is high enough to play back all the quality of each individual recording. That is as good as it gets. 
 
The rest is up to you-what you are listening on, and what you plug into. The music audio quality is always potentially great, depending on your own location and equipment. That said, the sound found here will always be the best it can be, reaching the true potential of any playback equipment you listen through.

Click on the Map just to the right of the Menu button at the top left corner of the screen. The Map provides an overview of the site and a quick way to navigate to any area of interest. The boxes in white are clickable. You can pop up and close the map from anywhere on the site.

How do I reset my password?
========================================

You can change your password by logging out of your account (Menu/Account) and clicking the "Don't remember your password?" link on the login window. You'll then receive a password reset email.

How do I log in or out of my account?
========================================

To log in or out of your NYA account, click the menu icon in the upper-left corner of any page in NYA. To log in, click the button in the upper-right corner of the menu that says  “log in.” To log out, open the same menu, and click the button that says “log out” in the upper right-hand corner under your name.

How do I change the email address associated with my account?
========================================
To change your name or email address:
Click the Menu button in the top left of NYA.
Click “Account” on the right-hand side.
On the “Account Overview” screen, you'll see the option to edit your name and email address.

How do I delete my account? 
========================================
You can delete your account at any point on the [Account Overview Page](https://neilyoungarchives.com/account "Account Overview Page").

How do I delete my account data?
========================================
The data shown on your "My Data" page is the information necessary to make it possible for you to log into your account (and to keep track of subscription information for those with a paid NYA subscription).

To delete your data, you may delete your account using the "Delete my Account" button on your Account Overview page. This will remove you as a user of NYA and wipe all of the data used to allow you to log in and use the site.

How do I subscribe to NYA?

You can find a “Subscribe” button in the center of the home page. 

You can also subscribe, or manage your subscription, in the [Plans](https://neilyoungarchives.com/account?screen=plans) section of your account.

How do I cancel my subscription or stop it from auto-renewing?
========================================
You can cancel your subscription by visiting the website (not mobile) version of NYA. Then go to your Subscription page by choosing "cancel subscription" at the bottom of the window. (Note: don't click the "delete my account" button on the Account Overview page; this will delete your entire account and you will no longer have access to the site.)

You will continue to have access to the Archives through the rest of your subscription period, but your subscription will not automatically renew. When your subscription expires you can choose whether or not you'd like to renew it; otherwise, you will be switched to the free subscription plan at that time.

How do I upgrade my subscription from Classic to Rust or Patron?
========================================
To upgrade your subscription, head to the [Plans](https://neilyoungarchives.com/account?screen=plans) page on the desktop (not mobile) version of NYA. You can find a full list of what's included in the different subscription tiers there, too.

Your upgrade price will be automatically calculated based on the remaining value of your current subscription.

How do I purchase a gift subscription?

To order a gift subscription, have the recipient's email address handy and visit the "[Gift](https://neilyoungarchives.com/account?screen=gift)" page in your account section. Then just fill in the details.

Note that gift subscriptions are for one year only.

How do I redeem my gift subscription?

To redeem your gift subscription, go to Menu/Giftcard 

If you already have an NYA subscription and would like to use this credit to renew your subscription, please cancel your account prior to your renewal date to prevent your account from automatically renewing. Once your subscription expires, you can use your gift code to get a new subscription. To cancel the auto-renewal, click “cancel subscription” at the bottom of the [Subscription Page](https://neilyoungarchives.com/account?screen=subscription). Please be careful to make sure you don’t accidentally delete your account instead of canceling it. 

How do I cancel my Apple subscription?

To manage your Apple subscription on your iPhone or iPad:
1. Open the Settings app.

4. Tap the Neil Young Archives subscription.

How do I redeem my high-res download code?

To redeem your high-res download, please make sure to download from the desktop (not mobile) site and that you're using an up-to-date browser.

If you are logged in to NYA at store.neilyoungarchives.com (a different page from the main archives), you should click "Code Redemption" (left sidebar), enter your code and then "My Downloads" (left sidebar), and click the “download” button. 

Once your code has been redeemed, the album will be added to your "My Downloads" section on the NYA Xstream store and can be downloaded from there anytime.

What are Timeline Concerts, and how can I find them?

This dot above a tour on the timline indicates there's a Tour Itinerary. Timeline Concerts can be found on Tour Itineraries.

If a show has a performance log, you can view the set list, play the live recording, and read the user requests for the show sent in by Rust and Patron members.

Rust & Patron subscribers can submit a request of their own through the performance log window.

You can also see what concerts have been most recently added in the “[New This Week](/news/10/article?id=Inside-NYA-New-This-Week)” article in the Times Contrarian. 

How do I submit a timeline concert request?
========================================
Rust- and Patron-level NYA subscribers can submit requests to us by using the "SUBMIT A REQUEST" button.

To find that button, just go to any tour on the Timeline with a silver dot above it and click the tour, then the "ITINERARY" button on the detailed pop-up. You'll see the big blue "SUBMIT A REQUEST" button at the bottom of the itinerary. If you're a Rust- or Patron-level subscriber, you can then complete and submit your performance request.

Be sure to have the date (MM/DD/YYYY) of the show you'd like to hear ready, as well as any message you'd like to include. (You can also click "yes" for "can we print your message?" so that your note may be available for viewing on the Timeline as well.) 

Please note that in order for us to follow up on your request, it must come to us via the Request Submission form. Requests included in letters sent via the Contact Form cannot be processed.

Why can’t I get pre-sale tickets as a monthly subscriber?
========================================
We are offering pre-sale tickets because we want fans to get the best seats in the house and we want to do whatever we can to stop scalpers from getting their hands on them.  (A difficult task, but a fight we will keep on fighting).  If we offer this feature to monthly subscribers, then there is nothing preventing people from signing up for 1 month just for tickets.  This way the real fans, who are here for the long haul will get access to the tickets. 

Why can’t I buy tickets from the apps?
========================================
Tickets are only available from the website. We are not allowed by Apple and Google to add a link on the apps to direct members to another site to purchase the tickets. And if we sold them from the app there would be a 30% surcharge to pay for the fee Apple and Google would assess.

How do I buy pre-sale tickets using my NYA subscription?
========================================

First, you will need to find the tab labeled “Tickets” under your account setting—you may also find convenient links to this page on the front of the cabinet and in the NYA Times-Contrarian when new pre-sales are announced—this is where you will get your personalized pre-sale codes and find links out to ticket vendor websites. 

Simply find the pre-sale stub listing the show you want attend and click the blue “Get Code” button at the bottom of the stub.

When you click the “Get Code” button your code will appear. The “Get Code” button will now say “Copy Code”, which you can click to copy the code to your clipboard. Once you have copied your code, click the blue “Buy Tickets” to go to the ticket vendor’s website where you can paste your code and buy your tickets!  Get the best seats in the house in just a few to 10 clicks. Don’t forget: Pre-sale codes are for YEARLY subscribers only.

What if I want to buy more than four tickets to a show?
========================================

We’d love you to bring some friends, but to keep scalping low and availability high we’ve limited each NYA subscriber’s account to four tickets per show. Your friend will have to purchase two more tickets through their NYA Yearly subscription.

I don’t see a “Get Code” button on the presale ticket stub.
========================================

It’s possible that some of our upcoming shows might not have a pre-sale window for contractual or logistical reasons, but it’s also possible that the window for pre-sales has closed—if you want the best seats in the house you’ll need to keep a vigilant eye on the NYA Times-Contrarian to avoid showing up for your pre-sale tickets after sales have been opened up to the general public.

How do Playlists work?

NYA now offers the ability to make playlists-- a benefit we offer only to our subscribers.  After you make a playlist you will find it on the Playlists window. You can navigate there through the global menu. To create a new playlist, click the “New Playlist” button on the left-side menu.

Use the plus icon on info cards and album pages  to add tracks to your playlists or create new playlists.

Simply drag and drop songs within your playlist to re-order them.

How do I reset my password?

You can change your password by logging out of your account and clicking the "Don't remember your password?" link on the login window. You'll then receive a password reset email.

How do I log in or out of my account?

To log in or out of your NYA account, click the global menu icon in the upper-left corner of any page in NYA. To log in, click the button in the upper-right corner of the menu that says  “log in.” To log out, open the same global menu, and click the button that says “log out” in the upper right-hand corner under your name.

How do I change the email address associated with my account?
========================================

To change your name or email address:
Click the Global Menu button in the top left of NYA.
Click the down arrow next to your name on the right-hand side.
Select “Account.”
On the following screen, you'll see the option to edit your name and email address.
Please do this from the website on a desktop or tablet.

How do I delete my account? 
========================================
You can delete your account at any point from the website on a desktop or tablet on the [Account Overview Page](https://neilyoungarchives.com/account "Account Overview Page").

How do I delete my account data?
========================================
The data shown on your "My Data" page is the information necessary to make it possible for you to log into your account (and to keep track of subscription information for those with a paid NYA subscription).

To delete your data, you may delete your account using the "Delete my Account" button on your Account Overview page from the website on a desktop or tablet. This will remove you as a user of NYA and wipe all of the data used to allow you to log in and use the site.

How do I cancel my subscription or stop it from auto-renewing?

You can cancel your subscription by visiting the web (not mobile) version of NYA. Then go to your Subscription page by choosing "cancel subscription" at the bottom of the window. (Note: don't click the "delete my account" button on the Account Overview page; this will delete your entire account and you will no longer have access to the site.)

You will continue to have access to the Archives through the rest of your subscription period, but your subscription will not automatically renew. When your subscription expires you can choose whether or not you'd like to renew it; otherwise, you will be switched to the free subscription plan at that time.

How do I upgrade my subscription from Classic to Rust or Patron?

To upgrade your subscription, head to the [Plans](https://neilyoungarchives.com/account?screen=plans) page on the desktop (not mobile) version of NYA. You can find a full list of what's included in the different subscription tiers there, too.

Your upgrade price will be automatically calculated based on the remaining value of your current subscription.

How do I purchase a gift subscription?

To order a gift subscription, have the recipient's email address handy and visit the "[Gift](https://neilyoungarchives.com/account?screen=gift)" page in your account section. Then just fill in the details.

Note that gift subscriptions are for one year only.

How do I redeem my gift subscription?

If you already have an NYA subscription and would like to use this credit to renew your subscription, please cancel your account prior to your renewal date to prevent your account from automatically renewing. Once your subscription expires, you can use your gift code to get a new subscription. To cancel the auto-renewal, click “cancel subscription” at the bottom of the [Subscription Page](https://neilyoungarchives.com/account?screen=subscription). How do I cancel my Apple subscription?

To manage your Apple subscription on your iPhone or iPad:
1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap your name.
3. Tap “Subscriptions.”
4. Tap the Neil Young Archives subscription.
5. Tap “Cancel Subscription.” You might need to scroll down to find the “Cancel Subscription” button. If there is no “Cancel” button or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription has already been canceled.

How do I redeem my high-res download code?

To redeem your high-res download, please make sure to download from the desktop (not mobile) site and that you're using an up-to-date browser.

If you are logged in to NYA at store.neilyoungarchives.com (a different page from the main archives), you should click "Code Redemption" (left sidebar), enter your code and then "My Downloads" (left sidebar), and click the “download” button. 

Once your code has been redeemed, the album will be added to your "My Downloads" section on the NYA Xstream store and can be downloaded from there anytime.

What are Timeline Concerts, and how can I find them?

If a show has a performance log, you can view the set list, play the live recording, and read the user requests for the show sent in by Rust and Patron members.

Rust & Patron subscribers can submit a request of their own through the performance log window from the website on a desktop or tablet.

You can also see what concerts have been most recently added in the “[New This Week](/news/10/article?id=Inside-NYA-New-This-Week)” article in the Times Contrarian. 

How do I submit a timeline concert request?
========================================
Rust- and Patron-level NYA subscribers can submit requests to us by using the "SUBMIT A REQUEST" button. Please note this can only be done on the web version of NYA, not on the mobile app.

To find that button, just go to any tour on the Timeline with a silver dot above it and click the tour, then the "ITINERARY" button on the detailed pop-up. You'll see the big blue "SUBMIT A REQUEST" button at the bottom of the itinerary. If you're a Rust- or Patron-level subscriber, you can then complete and submit your performance request.

Be sure to have the date (MM/DD/YYYY) of the show you'd like to hear ready, as well as any message you'd like to include. (You can also click "yes" for "can we print your message?" so that your note may be available for viewing on the Timeline as well.) 

Please note that in order for us to follow up on your request, it must come to us via the Request Submission form. Requests included in letters sent via the Contact Form cannot be processed.

Why can’t I get pre-sale tickets as a monthly subscriber?
========================================
Well, it’s simple really.  We are offering pre-sale tickets because we want fans to get the best seats in the house and we want to do whatever we can to stop scalpers from getting their hands on them.  (A difficult task, but a fight we will keep on fighting).  If we offer this to monthly subscribers, then there is nothing preventing people from signing up for 1 month just for tickets.  This way the big fans, the ones who are here for the long haul, will get the tickets.  It’s something we are trying...

How do I buy pre-sale tickets using my NYA subscription?
========================================

First, you will need to find the tab labeled “Tickets” under your account setting—you may also find convenient links to this page on the front of the cabinet and in the NYA Times-Contrarian when new pre-sales are announced—this is where you will get your personalized pre-sale codes and find links out to ticket vendor websites. 

Simply find the pre-sale stub listing the show you want attend and click the blue “Get Code” button at the bottom of the stub.

When you click the “Get Code” button your code will appear. The “Get Code” button will now say “Copy Code”, which you can click to copy the code to your clipboard. Once you have copied your code, click the blue “Buy Tickets” to go to the ticket vendor’s website where you can paste your code and buy your tickets!  Get the best seats in the house in just a few to 10 clicks. Don’t forget: Pre-sale codes are for YEARLY subscribers only.

What if I want to buy more than four tickets to a show?
========================================

We’d love you to bring some friends, but to keep scalping low and availability high we’ve limited each NYA subscriber’s account to four tickets per show. Your friend will have to purchase two more tickets through their NYA Yearly subscription.

I don’t see a “Get Code” button on the presale ticket stub.
========================================

It’s possible that some of our upcoming shows might not have a pre-sale window for contractual or logistical reasons, but it’s also possible that the window for pre-sales has closed—if you want the best seats in the house you’ll need to keep a vigilant eye on the NYA Times-Contrarian to avoid showing up for your pre-sale tickets after sales have been opened up to the general public.

When music starts playing the screen will partially turn green to indicate how much of the song’s full resolution you are listening to. Best is when the screen is all green. 

The meter to the left shows the actual streaming data in kilobits per second of the song, which can vary from 64 kbps to over 5000 kbps (Hi-res master quality). 

For those few times when you don’t have a good wireless connection and want to avoid any data interruptions, you can use the toggle switch to go to 320kbps.

Hello, and welcome to Neil Young Archives or simply NYA, to the several of you who refer to it often enough to desire a timesaving device. To those latter folks: this briefish article is likely not for you, but feel free to stick around. I’ve been asked to write a friendly explainer for the site that lists the sorts of things you can find here and provides tips for finding them. I personally can’t imagine why we suddenly feel the need to do this—I challenge you to find another website to rival us for clarity and navigability—but nevertheless…

Neil Young Archives refers both to the collections of archival materials in various media stored in various repositories that document the life and work of Neil Young and to the portal through which you, the Neil Young Archives subscriber, are granted access to those collections. The portal—this website—provides access to audio and video recordings; digital facsimiles of manuscripts, photographs, ephemera, LPs, press clippings; and, of course, a mechanism or two for requesting that materials be made accessible if they are not currently on display. 

Songs are represented by infocards that you can find in the filing cabinet, in the tracklist of albums or playlists, or on the bottom half of the timeline (represented by a dot on the recording date). From an infocard you can initiate chronological auto-play by hitting the play button: once the song is finished the song Neil recorded next will play. The infocard also acts as a folder within which you might find any archival assets associated with that song: manuscripts, photographs, press items, ephemera and memorabilia, videos, as well as the lyrics as transcribed from that specific recording. 

If you click on the album cover (or stack of album covers) at the top right of the infocard you can navigate to any of the albums on which that specific recording appears. From the album page you can view the full album art gallery by clicking on the album cover or any archival assets associated with that album by clicking on the “More” tab above the tracklist. If you click play anywhere on the album page (either on the Play Album button or the play button that appears when you hover over a track) the songs will play in album order. 

At the bottom of the Album page there’s a button that will take you to that album’s place on the Timeline (either its release date or the final recording date, depending on whether you have your timeline set to Release or Completion Date view—Release Date is the default). If you come to the timeline via this button there will be a popup tag associated with the album you came from; on this tag you can click “View” to return to the album page or “View Tracks” to see the dates on which each track on that album was recorded as represented by the dots on the bottom of the timeline. 

While we’re on the timeline let’s look around at what else is on offer, because some of it can be a little hard to find—as I’m always telling Neil, if you wanted the timeline to be less cluttered you should have been less prolific. First: Timeline Concerts. These are full, unedited concerts presented in the highest available resolution, selected with the help of hundreds and hundreds of Rust & Patron subscriber requests. Each of these concert recordings is available to stream for Rust & Patron subscribers by clicking on any tour icon that has an itinerary book tag on it:

You can see the entire itinerary for the tour, read the requests for each posted show (or at least the requests we’ve been given license to publish), and submit a request of your own from this page.


Rust- and Patron-level NYA subscribers can submit concert requests to us by using the "SUBMIT A REQUEST" button on the Contact page.

To find that button, just go to any tour on the  Timeline with a silver dot above it and click the tour, then the "ITINERARY" button on the detail pop-up. Compared to typical MP3 streaming (Spotify, Pandora, etc.), Xstream uses up to 20 times more data. This allows you to experience the clarity, richness, transparency, and detail of the original performance, instead of the flat-sounding, highly compressed audio that other streaming services provide.  

Based on your listening conditions, Xstream automatically adjusts the streaming rate (expressed in kbps) to deliver an enjoyable streaming experience, from MP3 at the low end when conditions are adverse, all the way up to full 192kHz/24-bit high resolution when conditions are optimal. For most situations today, home WiFi and cell services provide sufficient bandwidth with no compromises.

NYA MUSIC FILES ARE ALL MASTER QUALITY, RANGING FROM 44.1kHz/16-bit to 192kHz/24-bit. They are not compromised by compression schemes developed to save memory. NYA files are equivalent to the original recordings that were created in the studio or in concert.

Because NYA music files are data rich, the audio quality you experience will be dependent on your network speed, your computer’s processor, its available memory, and the other activities you may be doing on your computer while listening. Watching the height of the green bar in the player window lets you know how much of the Full Resolution file you are receiving. If your computer's configuration or bandwidth are insufficient, your music may skip or stutter. We have provided a 320 switch that will provide the music at a Spotify streaming equivalent for those situations.

The VU meter allows you to determine the streaming rate at any point in time. Full hi-res will vary between about 4000 to 6000 depending on the music content.

For reference, an MP3 file will stream from 60 up to 320 kbps, a 44.1kHz/16-bit (CD) is 1,4112Kbps and a high-res 192kHz/24-bit recording at 4000 to 9,216Kbps.     

For best results we recommend the following setup:
- A network download speed of 50 Mbps or more. (You can check your speed [here](https://www.google.ca/search?q=speed+test&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1-ab&gfe_rd=cr&dcr=0&ei=gs4eWsXtD8ODX6D3ioAK)
- Computer memory minimum 4GB, more will sound better.
- Mac or PC computer with a medium to high-speed processor, preferably 4 core or more
- Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Opera browser
- An external DAC (See page 6 in the Times-Contrarian for recommendations)

An optional 320 kbps setting allows you to avoid most skipping and buffering, but limits your ability to listen to music at full quality.

__Improving audio quality from your computer__
=====================================

Computers as they come out of the box do not really have the best audio output systems. They are built for a price. But there are ways to optimize your listening pleasure with some basic rules.

__Adding an External DAC__
Your computer has a built-in digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that converts the digital music files to analog, necessary for your headphones or audio system to work. Many find that they can improve audio performance by adding a higher quality external DAC to bypass the internal one. You then connect your headphones or music system to the external DAC.

All current computers are capable of high resolution to 24/96. Xstream requires the setting of the output device to the highest quality (or 24/192 if your external DAC supports that). The operating system will resample whatever the current rate is to the default rate. So setting this to the highest available will result in the best sound.

On macOS you would need to set the internal or external DAC from here:

You can pull down the Format setting and set the output to 96K. The 32bit floating format is used internally for CoreAudio devices on macOS and is basically high res all the time.

If you had an external DAC via USB or some other interface it would show up here as well with the available settings for output.

The little speaker icon indicates the current default output. You can right click any of the available output devices and set that device as your default output if you like.

Remember all of this should be done before running a browser or any playback software. Ounce done it will default to this until changed.

More information for setting up your computer for high resolution audio

Check the settings of your computer’s sound card (audio drivers) to be sure it is set for maximum audio quality. You’ll want 24-bit and the highest sampling frequency available. Most of the material on this site is available in  High Res 192 kHz/24-bit. You’ll also want to turn off all tone controls, spatializing, and surround channels, as most of these features downsample to 16bit/48kHz. On a Mac. you'll find these settings under Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup. 

On a Windows PC, you'll find these settings by right-clicking the speaker icon in your system tray. Click Playback Devices, select your speaker, click Properties, click Advanced Tab, click the dropdown menu, and select sample and bit rates, then Apply.

More technical details
==============================
DACs convert the digital files we are streaming to you into the analog sound we all hear. Most computers have very basic DACs inside that limit the sound of Neil’s music. As noted above, an external DAC is the answer. You want the raw digital signal without any processing, and it’s usually available either as an optical or USB connection from your computer. To get full 192/24 signal you’ll need a USB DAC input that supports USB Audio Class 2 (not to be confused with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0), and preferably in ‘asynchronous’ mode, meaning that the audio signal gets special treatment and the cleanest sound. Most Optical connections are limited to 96kHz—but not all—this is still High Res and is a more commonly found connector than Audio Class 2 USB.

The external DAC goes between your computer and your stereo system, and connects in the same fashion as connecting a CD Player to your stereo. Many modern amplifiers have High-Res DACs built in, allowing you to connect your computer directly to the amp by optical or USB. If you haven’t improved your stereo in the last 10 years it might be worth looking at today’s offerings as there has been a lot of improvement in sound reproduction. For example, [NAD Electronics](https://www.nadelectronics.com) has many affordable options for High-Res DACs, and amplifiers with DACs built in.

We may, at any time and for any or no reason (including if we believe you have violated or acted inconsistently with the letter or spirit of this Agreement), terminate or suspend your access to or use of:  (a) the Site, (b) your user name and password or (c) any files or information associated with your user name and password.  If we terminate or suspend your access to or use of the Site, you will not have the right to bring claims against us, our Affiliates or our or their respective Artists, Representatives and Providers with respect to such termination or suspension.  We and our Affiliates and our and their respective Artists, Representatives and Providers, shall not be liable for any termination or suspension of your access to the Site or to any such information or files, and shall not be required to make such information or files available to you after any such termination or suspension. The arbitration will be administered by the American Arbitration Association under its Consumer Arbitration Rules, as amended by this Agreement. The arbitrator will conduct hearings, if any, by teleconference or videoconference, rather than by personal appearances, unless the arbitrator determines upon request by you or by us that an in-person hearing is appropriate. If the parties are unable to agree on a location, such determination should be made by the AAA or by the arbitrator. The arbitrator’s decision will follow the terms of this Agreement and will be final and binding. The arbitrator will have authority to award temporary, interim or permanent injunctive relief or relief providing for specific performance of this Agreement, but only to the extent necessary to provide relief warranted by the individual claim before the arbitrator. The award rendered by the arbitrator may be confirmed and enforced in any court having jurisdiction thereof. Notwithstanding any of the foregoing, nothing in this Agreement will preclude you from bringing issues to the attention of federal, state or local agencies and, if the law allows, they can seek relief against us for you.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, you agree that any unauthorized use of the Site, Services, Products or any related software or materials, or any Third Party Applications, would result in irreparable injury to us, our Affiliates or our or their respective Artists, Representatives and Providers for which money damages would be inadequate, and in such event we, our Affiliates or our or their respective Artists, Representatives and Providers, as applicable, shall have the right, in addition to other remedies available at law and in equity, to immediate injunctive relief against you.  Nothing contained in this section or elsewhere in this Agreement shall be construed to limit remedies or relief available pursuant to statutory or other claims that we, our Affiliates or our or their respective Artists, Representatives and Providers may have under separate legal authority, including, without limitation, any claim for intellectual property infringement.
(25)        __Filtering__.  Pursuant to 47 U.S.C. Section 230(d) as amended, we hereby notify you that parental control protections are commercially available that may assist you in limiting access to material that is harmful to minors. Albums are labeled on the file tabs positioned at the center of the folders, while the songs in the album are labeled with tabs at the left edge of the folders above the name of <u>__the__</u> album.

Once the music starts playing, you control it from the Player at the top right corner. If you click on the album cover you can read everything that is on the physical album cover.

Infocards appear on the front of each song file folder and on the Timeline. Each provides information about the song, including credits, lyrics, related videos, a button to add to your playlist and another to purchase a hi-res digital download at a low-res price. 
Click on the album to access the track list and play the entire album. You can advance through Infocards in chronological order using the arrows appearing to its left and right.


WELCOME! (& a few things before you start.)

NYA is the first of its kind musicians archive where you can explore and enjoy my albums, tracks, movies, video, art, and most everything about my music/art. The music can be streamed in Xstream by NYA High Res, and High Res downloads can be bought at Low Res prices. Each song is backed up with the archival material that relates to its creation: full credits, manuscripts, pictures, film-video, press. 

The NYA site is constantly living and breathing; it’s never finished. We offer full access to NYA at the low introductory price of $19.99 a year or $1.99 a month. Some features are only available to yearly subscribers. You can also explore and have limited access for free.


Once you have subscribed, my best advice is to simply explore the NYA on your own and find your own way through, much as you would in a physical archival library. But if you need some help, please watch my Welcome Message located on the outside of the file cabinet including a personal tour by me, or refer to the __FAQ__ where you should find answers to many of your questions. 

If you haven’t subscribed, check out the featured album on the cabinet door. It’s a great example of how the musical side of NYA works. Check out all the info cards for the featured album. If you do subscribe, you get all the music this way, not just the featured album. I hope you will join us for the full experience.

Also, continually check in at the __NYA Times-Contrarian__ . This is where I will keep in touch with you.

Now, please go and explore the world’s first musician’s online archives ever! I love listening to music this way. I can really hear it! There is no other way to hear and explore music in this audio quality anywhere in the world. 

We developed the Neil Young Archives site to provide fans and music historians with unprecedented access to all of my music and to my entire archives in one convenient location. My team and I have spent years developing this site to make it both enjoyable and easy to use. The site allows me to share with the world the material I’ve spent a lifetime creating and collecting. I hope you enjoy it.

The Top Bar contains many important functions and links and is accessible from all pages. From the left end:

The MENU takes you to a list of links that includes Log in, Account information, Gift cards, Membership tiers, a Merchandise store, a Digital Download store, a Contact form to reach Neil and customer service, Audio setup and information to help you use this site.

The SWITCH lets you choose full audio resolution or a lower resolution for very slow connection speeds. Normally it should be on MASTER
