We first met Nils when Crazy Horse played the Cellar Door in Washington DC. Nils was about 17 then when he came to the club to hear us. He had a lot of energy and was super-interested in music and bands. A while later Nils came down to LA and made his way out to Topanga, where he looked us up again. That’s how a teenaged Lofgren played piano and guitar on the ‘After The Gold Rush’ LP. When we did ‘Goldrush’, Briggs started producing Nils and Nils made several solo records with David.
A few years later after Danny Whitten died in 1973, Nils joined Crazy Horse with Ben Keith in Hollywood and played on ‘Tonight’s the Night’, an album for Danny and Bruce Berry, who had both died from heroin over-doses. As a founding member of that band, ‘The Santa Monica Flyers’, Nils playing and singing can be heard in full force on ‘ROXY, Tonight’s the Night Live’ and ‘Over the Rainbow’ (unreleased live recording) from The Rainbow in LONDON 1973. This album will be made available in the future.
Nils Lofgren had also contributed to Crazy Horse’s self-titled debut album in 1971, in which the band recorded their own songs without Young. Back In 1982, Nils played in the Trans Band touring Europe with the release of Trans. We did some of the Trans vocoder tracks together live on that tour and it was a blast.
Of course, Nils has been playing with Bruce Springsteen and the E street band for years and we will continue playing together every chance we can get.
NIls has been with us in spirit since the very beginning days. Now he is back in Crazy Horse playing guitar and organ and piano, singing and helping with the mixes just like Billy and Ralph and I, making Crazy Horse’s ‘Colorado’ in 2019. We are all one.
