My trip with Ben Young to the TrainShack was a wonderful happy day. We got on the freeway in his van and headed towards 1030 Hollywood Way in Burbank. There the TrainShack has existed since 1985, a family business, the best train store in the LA area today.
Ben was smiling the whole way there. When we arrived, they opened the door for his wheelchair and welcomed us in. Ben is 44 now and was there with me in back in ’94 when he was just 14. That was 30 years ago, the salesman, a member of the Keck family told us.
The TrainShack is full of trains of all scales. I was fascinated and captivated, immediately checking all the new Lionel Legacy product on the shelves. These trains are still the standard of the industry with incredible operations and features unparalleled in the model train world.
We found a beautiful new New York Central steam switcher with a swinging bell that moved with the bell sound! Mr. Keck enabled it with the Legacy Cab controller in his hand, demonstrating. It made me happy to see the continued use of the system today.
The Legacy System is something we invented back in the nineties when we had a company called Liontech. I was working with Lou Kovach, a super talented independent engineer. We were envisioning and creating the Legacy System for Lionel. Thanks to Richard Kughn, owner and CEO of Lionel at that time, we had freedom to create. The Legacy system is still the Lionel standard today and we are very proud of that!
Ben was smiling ear to ear watching Mr. Keck our sales person demonstrate the NYC 222 switcher with its swinging bell! We had to have it and put it on the counter.
I saw some nice F3 diesels and other small diesels on the shelf that I liked. I am not as into the big new stuff as I am onto the smaller locomotives. These Lionel Legacy engines have all the system features, momentum, braking, and so much more. We were having a blast!
We bought two steamers and a small controller for a boy that visited the trains at Three Rail World and wanted to run them. When he comes back to our layout, we will see him running a train with this new smaller Legacy Controller! That will be super exciting for both Ben and I. It is a shared love!
On the way home, I wondered about the next trip to the TrainShack. Will I get the two diesels I liked? I need them for the layout. The older pullmor motors in some of my Postwar diesels are just not as good operationally as the new Lionel Legacy ones we saw. We will have to go back to the TrainShack soon to get ’em! I told Ben. He smiled as the freeway traffic whizzed by in all directions. Almost home.
When we unpacked the switcher and read the directions, putting everything together and adding smoke, we had a blast at the Three Rail World for hours!
