DECADE was released in 1977 as a triple album. 35 songs recorded between 1966 and 1976 were included, five of them unreleased tracks, celebrating ten years of making records for Reprise and Atlantic /ATCO. I wrote little messages in longhand about each song and Tom Wilkes produced a beautiful cover for the project. Tom had created the original Harvest cover and was a friend of mine who used to live two houses away from me in the Topanga Canyon 60s.
The record spans a lot of early history, from Buffalo Springfield to Crazy Horse and the Stray Gators, Robin, Nicollete, Linda and Emmy Lou. I am thankful for the great times we all had making this music together.
At the end of compiling, I was writing a song called ‘Decade’ that I never did finish. The last I remember of it is wandering around out side the studio in the Redwoods at my beautiful Broken Arrow Ranch, singing one line over and over:
”Decade, you have come and gone and left me here sitting all alone, Decade, you have come and gone.”
I had no idea where I was going and where my music would take me. If you were there in those times, I want to say a special hello to you.
